A three-storey building height machine will dig Sofia subway tunnels

The new tunnel digging machine is three-storey heigh and 1,600 t heavy, it has specially designed and manufactured for Sofia subway project, the section between Nadezhda road junction and the crossing of Vitosha blvd. and Patriarh Evtimii blvd.
The section is financed by Transport operational programme through the European Fund for Regional Development.
The machine will be transported to Bulgaria along the Danube river for about two months.
The real building works are to start on 2 April 2010, the tunnel digging will take 15 months.
The specially designed machine is worth EUR 15m.
This technology is one of the latest, most modern and safest methods for tunnels in downtown areas. It was already used for the two separate tunnels from Sveta Nedelia square to the crossing of Dragan Tsankov blvd. and Evlogi Georgiev blvd.
